Religious survey finds 9 percent of Americans believe in Lil B

An annual poll determining religious affiliation in the U.S. found that more than 9 percent of Americans strongly believe in Lil B “The Based God.” Of the 68,000 people surveyed this year by the Pew Research Center, more than 6,200 people hand-wrote in Lil B’s name,

Lil B shared a tweet this morning, just a few hours after Pew published the report:

“THANK U FOR BELIEVING IN ME!!! I BELIEVE IN ME TOO!! LIL B LOVES U!! - Lil B”

Christianity in the U.S. dropped almost 3 percent since last year’s survey, but atheism was hit the hardest, losing a staggering 6 percent of religious affiliation. It’s speculated that the majority of that 6 percent were the ones who wrote in Lil B’s name this year.

David Silverman, American Atheists communications director, expressed dismay at the recent downturn.

"It’s a sad day when people go from not believing in something that isn’t real to believing in something that is real,” Silverman said. “I don’t believe it.”

However, whether or not the survey results were legitimate remains to be seen. Internet pranksters on the popular message board 4chan have been known to stack polls in the past.
